He Built the Orchestra, Then Walked Out of It

Robert Ames co-founded the London Contemporary Orchestra and spent eighteen years conducting it. He has now left, and in this conversation he explains what the classical training pipeline costs before anyone earns anything from it, why the players who can afford to stay are increasingly the ones who never needed the work, and what he thinks an orchestra is actually for once you stop assuming it should exist.
