Five Thousand Game Magazines In, the Hard Part Is Making Them Findable

The Video Game History Foundation's digital archive passed five thousand magazines, which Phil Salvador puts at roughly 600,000 pages, or a hundred feet of shelf if you stacked it. The interesting half of the post is not the number but the cataloguing behind it: a Japanese language pilot beginning with Neo Geo Freak, text recognition built specifically for Japanese type rather than borrowed from English, and major articles indexed in English by hand so that a researcher who cannot read Japanese can still find them. Salvador also counts more than five hundred Wikipedia citations now pointing into the archive, which is the closest thing there is to a measure of whether any of this worked.

A Year in the Lab Working Out How to Repair a Blue That Resists Repair

Yves Klein's International Klein Blue swallows light, which is exactly what makes it almost impossible to conserve: the matte surface defeats instrumental colour reading, so a damaged Blue Venus has to be matched by eye. James Hughes spent a year reconstructing how the pigment was made in order to work out how it could be mended, mixing synthetic ultramarine into adhesive, altering particle size by scraping and grinding and sifting, and spraying plaster mock-ups until the repair disappeared. The piece ends on before and after details of the shoulder, and on an argument for the smallest intervention that works.

The Network Said She Had No Television Credits, So He Hired Her Anyway

Showrunner Nick Antosca pushed to put Celiana Cardenas behind the camera on AMC's Cape Fear over network objections that she had never shot television, and the two of them walk through what they built once he won the argument. Cardenas is specific about the tools and the reasoning: the Alexa 35 for its saturation and contrast, and atmosphere made on set with wet-downs rather than rescued later in the grade. It is a craft conversation with the hiring fight left in rather than edited out.

The National Theatre Turned Fifty, and Its Critics Were Looking at the Wrong Thing

Denys Lasdun's concrete complex on the South Bank is fifty, and Will Wiles goes through it as a piece of civic machinery rather than a monument to be defended or attacked. He is interested in the board formed concrete, the terraces, and above all in the way the foyers leak out into the city, arguing that the relationship between the building and the street is effectively the fourth theatre. The anniversary is the peg; the reading of the building is the piece.

His Professor Collapsed in Stockholm, So He Delivered the Nobel Lecture Himself

Michael Labowsky went to Stockholm in 2002 as the guest of his former doctoral supervisor John Fenn, who had just won the chemistry prize for electrospray ionisation. Days into the ceremonial week Fenn went into heart failure, and Labowsky was asked to deliver the formal Nobel lecture at Uppsala in his place, with almost no notice and almost no experience of speaking in public. He writes the week from the inside, including the co-inventors whose multiply charged ions made the method work, among them Masamichi Yamashita, Matthias Mann and Chin-Kai Meng. Fenn recovered, kept working, and died in 2010.

Lesbian Audiences Turned the 1970s Vampire Film Into Camp

Katie Rife argues that lesbian viewers in the first years of gay liberation took two films made for men, Roy Ward Baker's The Vampire Lovers and Harry Kumel's Daughters of Darkness, and read them against the grain. A monster built out of male anxiety about female sexuality became one of the only available images of desire on a screen. Rife works through the scholarship of Andrea Weiss and Bonnie Zimmerman, reads the performances of Ingrid Pitt and Delphine Seyrig closely, and brings in Mikaela Clements on what those figures still offer. It is a reception history built on what audiences did with the films rather than on what the films intended.

Jose Giovanni Wrote French Crime Cinema After a Commuted Death Sentence

Giovanni was born Joseph Damiani, joined a Nazi-affiliated outfit in 1944, and had a death sentence for triple murder commuted to life before he became one of the defining writer-directors of French crime cinema. Max Borg reports from San Sebastian, where a full retrospective ran that he argues could not now be mounted in France, and works through why the criminal past is not separable from the writing. The piece was built in the room, including a conversation with a Cahiers du Cinema critic, rather than from the festival's own material.
