Stephen Shore on What Walker Evans Was Actually Doing When He Looked

Shore takes apart another photographer's seeing rather than his pictures, working from Evans's frames and from the remarks Evans made to Leslie George Katz in 1971. What he is after is the particular quality of attention behind the work, the decision about where to stand and what to let into the edge of the frame, and he traces what he carried out of that into his own practice. It is one working photographer explaining what another one taught him, which is a rarer thing than a critic explaining either of them.
