Thirty-Three Frames Shot on 12 September 2001, Held for Twenty-Five Years
By Ian Michna · Jenkem Magazine

Mike O'Meally went out with a camera the morning after the towers fell and skated through a downtown Manhattan with almost nobody in it. He shot thirty-three frames, then put the film away and left it there for twenty-five years. He has now collected them as a book called 9/12, and what he remembers of that day is not the version anyone else circulates: people on the sidewalk waving the skaters on, an atmosphere he describes to Ian Michna as weird optimistic.

Design

A Tulum Housing Block Built Against the Tower of Babel — Metropolis

Five Chicago Interiors, Explained by the Designer Who Did Them — Design Milk

Thirty-Seven Years of Folding Phones, Seen Through CT Scans — iFixit

Seven Ben Shahn Posters, and the Practice Abstraction Buried — Poster House

Arts & Culture

Alia Bare Takes Korhogo Cloth From Hand-Painted to Digital Print — Guzangs

Vladimir Seleznev Photographs Orthodoxy and the State Together — Blind Magazine

Side-Hung Drawers, Riven Oak, and the Variations He Allows Himself — Lost Art Press

Navjot Altaf on Who Carries the Waste, and Where It Settles — TAKE on Art

Sound

Paul Dunmall on Playing With Alice Coltrane, and Finding Meditations Jarring — UK Jazz News

Katherine Young Replaced the Score With a Taxonomy — Foxy Digitalis

Coupling Techno, Oil Painting and Self-Built Instruments Into One Rig — Sounding Future

How the Cash Register Loop on Money Was Actually Assembled — Mix

Collecting

A Thousand British Bus Maps, Kept Because Nobody Else Would — Cambridge University Library

A Hundred Pamphlets Bought From the Man Who Forged Them — Rylands Blog

One Failing Capacitor Killed a Whole Generation of Cheap SLRs — 35mmc

A Hundred and Twenty-Four Pre-War Machines on a Danish Beach — The Vintagent

Document

Two Thousand Notarial Records, and Who Really Owned the Headwraps — Age of Revolutions

The Shoga Was Killed Twice, by Colonial Law and Then by Liberation — Africa Is a Country

A Persian Illuminated Manuscript, Read Under Spectroscopy — British Library

When Historians Started Calling Organisms Technologies — JHI Blog

Film

What an Associate Editor Actually Does All Day — CineMontage

Pumpkin at Twenty-Four, and What It Got Right About Inter-Ability — Cinema Year Zero

Poitras and Mueller Built an ICE Documentary From Crowdsourced Footage — Modern Times Review

A Video Rental Shelf Inside a Chicago Movie Theater — Newcity Film

How Shiv-Hari Hid a Stalker Inside a Love Song
By Zane Merritt · Sounding Out!

Zane Merritt takes apart the score Shiv-Hari wrote for Yash Chopra's Darr in 1993 and finds the menace built into the orchestration rather than laid over it. Jaadu Teri Nazar opens as flirtation and turns proprietary in the arrangement. The instrumental Obsession escalates through percussion and wordless choir as Rahul's fantasy runs away from him, and by Tu Mere Saamne the track is breathing. Merritt traces a perfect fifth recurring across all three and argues the harmonica does the real work, an instrument that has to inhale and exhale at once to sound at all.

Design

Italy Is Building the Overcrowding Into the Prisons — Failed Architecture

The Back Room Is Getting the Budget the Front Room Used To — The Spaces

Silicone Lamps You Press, Pull or Bop Instead of Switching On — Yanko Design

Robert Osborn Drew American Mediocrity in 1960 and It Still Lands — PRINT Magazine

Arts & Culture

Ten Years of Berlin Doorways and Staircases, in Seventy-Nine Pictures — Collector Daily

Twenty-Three Years of Allevol, Corrected by the Man Who Built It — Permanent Style

The Lockpickers Who Post Everything and the Ones Who Never Did — Huck

Gillian Cooper on What the First Stitch Commits You To — TextileArtist

Sound

Nine Shows, Seven Venues, Four Days in Chicago — I Care If You Listen

Friedrich Hollaender's 1930 Cabaret Score, Read Cue by Cue — Movie Music UK

Bach's Pedalling, Argued From Eighteenth Century Shoes — The Diapason

Sixteen Pairs of Vietnamese Kite Flutes, Spun on Rotating Arms — Sonic Field

Collecting

Fifteen Thousand Engine Drawings, Seven Thousand of Them Unrecorded — The Museum of English Rural Life

A French Doctor Traced 867 Tattoos Off Prisoners' Skin — Flashbak

Two Eleven-Pound Hubs, Rescued From a Dead Mint — CoinWeek

A Planter's Thirty-Four Books, and the Earliest Shakespeare in America — Folger Shakespeare Library

Document

The Sea Peoples May Have Been Refugees as Much as Raiders — The Ancient Near East Today

The Alamo's Second Battle Was Over What the First One Meant — Not Even Past

Anna Julia Cooper's Universalism, Against Victorian Womanhood — Black Perspectives

Mercy Brown Died in 1892 and the Folklore Ate Her — Contingent Magazine

Film

Hope Keeps Putting Incompetent People Past Their Capacity — Reverse Shot

Six Films From Toronto, None of Them the Ones Being Sold — In Review Online

Framing British Sign Language When the Hands Are the Performance — British Cinematographer

Two Argentine Directors on Making a Manifesto Out of a Cineclub — desistfilm

Michael Scurr made the identification in May. The sheet had been carried aboard the American privateer Dalton, seized off Portugal by HM Raisonable on Christmas Eve that year, and filed with the prize papers ever since.

An Avatar of Yuja Wang, a Basement Bunker, and Eleven Out of a Hundred
By Eleanor Knight · Bachtrack

Pierre-Alain Giraud's installation puts the audience in headsets in a basement bunker under the Royal Festival Hall, free to walk around a pre-recorded avatar of Yuja Wang as she plays Ravel, Stravinsky, Bach and six other works. Warnings appear if you get too close to the piano. Eleanor Knight found the pianist herself curiously incidental to the whole apparatus, objected to the imagery and the heavy-handed setup, and scored it eleven out of a hundred.
